I'm looking forward to hosting a free webinar with @yogajournal this Thursday 3/26 at 11am Eastern which will include a brief discussion on the benefits of strength training, followed by a yoga class using resistance bands.

In this webinar, I'll talk about a biomechanics concept, progressive overload, and discuss the ways resistance bands can help you gain more mobility and strength in areas of your body that feel unstable or sore, as well as provide immediate feedback to help you move better and up level your skill in practice.
.
If you don't have bands, don't worry! Bands are optional. A yoga belt or long scarf can work instead. If you do have resistance bands, we’ll use a miniband (small loop) and one 3-5 foot long band.

Each week I’ll design a class that can be done with or without resistance bands.
.
Here are some props you can bring to your practice space if you have them:
.
ONE 3-5 foot long band, ONE miniband, TWO blocks, TWO blankets, ONE belt/scarf/long towel (which can act as a resistance band in some cases). You might also like to have a pair of socks. And if you are on a carpeted surface, you might also like to have a couple plastic bags.
.
The aim of this class is to explore challenging the under-challenged, under-contacted regions of our body in an accessible way and in a way that brings a sense of awareness, strength and integration. I hope these classes connect you with a sense of grounding and steadiness.

Watch this space for a ton of content that will help you build your OWN home practice for yourself - one that is responsive to your needs day to day, that helps you make decisions for yourself for building strength and endurance, craft your own workouts and sequences, and learn to love being loaded (with dumbbells and kettlebells).

I’m looking forward to digging into my studies o

I’m looking forward to digging into my studies over the next couple of months. My Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist textbook is calling my name. I’m halfway to ready for testing. This extra time might be just enough to finish studying and to test *soon* 🤷‍♀️ .
.
My KB and dumbbells are in my living room. I’m looking forward to doing more free weight home practices over the next few months (no gym for me! 🦠)
.
Today I did a lot of squats and skandasanas with the bell and it reminded me of this moment @asanacharlestown last week.
.
I’m not a pre-requisite type, in that, I’m not about to tell someone they *can’t* do some compound move because they don’t have some particular range at a single joint. In actuality we have far less control over our alignment in poses (aesthetics) and far more over our ability to adapt to loads.
.
This is because the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Smart progressive sequencing and clear cuing for scaling loading (loading principles rather than alignment) is key to building capacity, not movement avoidance and definitely not feeling like you always need some teacher to greenlight your ability to do something with some *prerequisite* bullshit.
.
We gotta learn to trust ourselves. A home practice is a wonderful place to start to build that self-trust.
.
That said, ankle ROM is a major piece in squatting (alignment DOES matter, it’s just a small piece of the puzzle) and something I personally have had to work on a lot. (First I needed to learn I needed to work on it.)
.
I’m gearing up to start sharing some weight and KB moves that I’ve been working on over the past couple of years — this for those of you who have some free weights lying around and are looking for a good way to get started in a progressive way that makes sense. I’ll probably do a brief tutorial on IGTV and then present an idea for a mini-practice you can do (that you can connect together with other mini practices to build a workout as we go.)
.
Okay, now back to the virus: here’s a bright side perspective — this might be a great time to build a home practice habit of any kind (the kind you’ve been wanting to build).

1) Boston and Charlestown are beautiful and I must go back as a tourist SOON.

2) @bewellwithsarah has an absolutely beautiful GEM of a studio and a warm, organized, and friendly staff. I felt so welcome at Asana and I can’t wait to return.
.
3) Pistachio pesto PIZZA! (Need I say more?) Thanks for organizing a pizza party Saturday night @thekatehamm and for coming out @neanzi.bellantoni @coach_kenny_bos @yogabywillow and other YTU family members (is Pat in IG?) ❤️

External load from resistance bands adds 2 incredible dimensions to the practice.
.
1️⃣ TOUCH — your skin is loaded with sensory neurons. The bands touch provides information to help you make connections to the parts it touches. In this sequence, I’m drawn to the connection of my opposite side foot and hand.
.
2️⃣ TENSION — your muscles, fascia, joint capsules are also all loaded with sensory neurons. The bands tension causes your muscles to have to generate tension to manage the bands line of pull. This tension is transferred to all relevant tissues involved, depending on how you where the bands and move against them. Here the tension runs across my body in big X as I rotate, resist rotation, and de-rotate.
.
These dimensions TOUCH and TENSION are scalable. There’s a resistance level rainbow of possibilities. 🌈

Today yoga postures are often practiced in rectangles - rooms and mats. But unlike the flat surfaces and perfectly straight lines of our external environment, we are indelibly wave-like, curvy, and spiraled. In this workshop, you’ll break free from grid-like movement and explore curving, spiraled, and undulating arcs to reclaim fluid movement from your spine to your extremities.

Learn progressive, variable-loading ‘know how’ to train for stronger wrists and shoulders.

A more old school yoga approach to hip and low back pain was often to practice deep hip-opening postures. However, many flexible, long-time practitioners still experience hip pain despite all this passive stretching. In this workshop, you’ll experience how building hip strength using resistance bands can leave you feeling more flexible than before, but with the strength, power, and poise to back it up.
