Body of Knowledge™: Interdisciplinary Movement Weekend of Workshops
For the curious and questioning practitioner who wants their practice and teaching to be guided by a deeper understanding of modern movement science.
Hip Deep: Stability is the Root of Mobility
Shouldering Effervescence: Shoulder to Wrist Reset
Core Rapport: Roll Around on the Floor
Dynamic Arm Balances: Pounce, Slither, Crawl
Better align your movement practice with goals for musculoskeletal health.
The broader arc of this weekend of workshops investigates the anatomical and biomechanical overlaps and gaps between the postures of modern postural yoga and basic human movements such as hinging, squatting, lunging, pushing, pulling, rolling, rotating, walking, and carrying heavy things.
You will gain a sense of where your asana practice may succeed and fail to expose your tissues to the necessary load input they need for healthy functioning.
Add dozens of corrective exercises and stability-enhancing movements to your self-care and therapeutic movement toolbox all of which you can practice and teach in the yoga space! Gain inspiration for how you can break free of the rectangle of your yoga mat! Incorporate supplemental exercises easy-to-get materials or materials you already have like:
- stretchy bands
- therapy balls
- socks
- new ways of using props
All of this serves to add to the nourishing benefits of how you already love to move!
Hip Deep: Stability is the Root of Mobility
Do your hips or SI joints click, hurt or feel chronically ‘tight?’ Escape the grid-like pattern of movement in asana and its bias toward passively ‘opening’ the hips.
Venture deep into a world of novel movement patterns and corrective exercises that will help you to diversify the loads to your legs, and stabilize their joints for greater mobility.
In this workshop you will:
- Engage in experiential joint anatomy tutorials of the hips and sacroiliac joints to better understand the all too common occurrence of hamstring tendinopathy, SI joint pain, hip bursitis and more.
- Get ideas for how to incorporate resistance bands into your yoga practice to experience the long term benefits of externally loading your tissues.
- Experience pose adaptations and prop strategies to regress, progress and adapt poses to explore a wider range of joint positions other than just end range.
- Practice a Body of Knowledge™: Functional Flow sequence that puts together the exercises learned earlier in the worksop in a fluid, multi-planar moving meditation. Move fluidly and on the breath, while exploring functional movement patterns that mimic the basic human movement we need for healthy, pain free living. Feel how mid-range positions may offer greater hip muscle leverage and opportunities to build heat, strength and stability.
Shouldering Effervescence: Shoulder to Wrist Reset
Do your wrists or shoulders feel sore on a regular basis and are you looking for solutions to help them feel better?
Learn several corrective exercises and load diversifying techniques to train your upper extremities for a wider range of stability and a greater felt sense of resilience.
In this workshop you will:
- Engage in experiential joint anatomy tutorials of the shoulders and wrists to better understand the common reasons for soreness, pinching sensations and nerve pain.
- Learn how to incorporate pulling exercises into your yoga practice to experience the long term benefits of varying the loads to your shoulders and wrists.
- Experience pose adaptations and prop strategies to regress, progress and adapt poses to explore a wider range of joint positions and add more variety to the way you nourish your joints through weight-bearing exercises.
- Practice a Body of Knowledge™: Functional Range Flow sequence that puts together the exercises learned earlier in the worksop while leaving out postures that might be overloading your body, like chatturanage – up dog – down dog.
Core Rapport: Roll Around on the Floor
Break free of over-used and abused core-strengthening exercises and learn new ways of enhancing core connection through task-based and reflexive strengthening movements.
Get down on the floor and roll around in order to strengthen your abdominals and enhance the suppleness of your spine.
In this workshop you will:
- Engage in anatomy tutorials that introduce the basics of spine and core muscle anatomy.
- Learn novel, feel good techniques for rolling around and changing positions on the floor that strengthen your abdominals and neck stabilizer muscles.
- Practice a Body of Knowledge™ functional flow sequence that puts together the exercises learned earlier in the worksop for a core and neck strength-centered sequence for a strong and supple spine from tail to head.
Dynamic Arm Balances: Pounce, Slither, Crawl
Animal movements provide endless opportunities to get close to the floor, move powerfully and dynamically and even take flight in jumps and dynamic arm balancing.
Regress to your evolutionary roots and the raw, expressive beauty of animal-inspired movement.
In this workshop you will:
- Engage in an experiential muscle anatomy tutorial to learn the muscles of the oblique sling that contributes to whole body contralateral movement patterns like walking and crawling.
- Learn regressions and progressions for quadrupedal and ground-based movements that seriously challenge and enhance shoulder to core and core to hip coordination and strength.
- Gain greater unilateral and contralateral coordination and strength.
- Learn regressions and progressions for dynamic arm balances and jumping patterns.
- Experience a fluid, meditative sequence that sets aside the performative allure of fancy yoga poses.
