Muscles Part 4 (Breath Focus): Anatomy and Physiology of the Breathing Apparatus
Module Descriptions
Joints Part 1: Anatomy and Biomechanics of Soft Tissues
Explore synovial joint architecture and learn the significance it has in determining joint mobility and stability. Explore the key biomechanical concepts of load and tissue adaptation to better understand the ways our bodies adapt in response to stress.
Joints Part 2: The Biomechanics of Passive and Active Stretching
Gain a more biomechanically informed understanding of what the terms ‘flexible’ and ‘inflexible’ mean as well as the implications that hyper-mobility has for joint health. Confront the challenges an asana practice can present for hyper-mobile students and strategies for tailoring the practice to improve strength and stability.
Day Two
Joints Part 3: Osteokinematics and Arthrokinematics
Apply foundational understanding of osteokinematics (movement of bones at a joint) and arthrokinematics (movement of bony surfaces inside the joint space) to better understand range of motion limitations, joint impingement and injury.
Joints Part 4: Structural Variation of the Hip and Implications to Asana Practice
Learn about different joint morphologies and how knowledge of structural variation challenges notions of ‘correct’ and ‘incorrect’ alignment in yoga postures.
Day Three
Muscles Part 1 (Hip Focus): How Muscles Contract
Experientially tour key muscles of your legs and hips and embody understanding of their structure and function. Gain understanding of how muscle contraction contributes to the wider body systems that govern mobility and stability in yoga.
Muscles Part 2 (Shoulder Mechanics Focus): Prime Movers, Synergists and Stabilizers
Physically explore the 3 different ways muscles contract through practices targeting the muscles of the shoulder girdle. Learn about scapular tilt and obtain strategies for maximizing shoulder joint centration and stability in commonly practiced asanas.
Day Four
Muscles Part 3 (Core Focus): Muscle Synergy in Movement
Take a closer look at the joints and muscles of the torso to gain a better understanding of dynamic core stabilization. Explore the body’s major kinetic chains and the muscle recruitment patterns that function to transfer force from the extremities to the spine.
Muscles Part 4 (Breath Focus): Anatomy and Physiology of the Breathing Apparatus
Explore the force of breath to learn its influence on the tissues of the core, and conversely, the tissues of the core’s influence on the mechanics of breath. Learn techniques to facilitate more awareness of the three abodes of breath – abdominal, thoracic and clavicular – and learn how commonly practiced and taught pranayama techniques rely on coordination and motor control of the breath apparatus in these regions.
FAQs
Who Can Take this Series?
This series consolidates, reviews and then goes way beyond anatomy introduced in yoga teacher training. No anatomy or teaching experience is necessary, although I recommend that you have at least a year of dedicated movement practice, like yoga, Pilates, fitness training, martial arts or dance.
How to Take this Series?
Modules can be taken together within the series or ala carte, as your schedule permits. Home study assignments are given as optional work to continue internalizing the concepts you spend learning experientially each module.
Recommended Books
Recommended Books: Kinesiology, Joseph E. Muscolino
Trail Guide to the Body, Andrew Biel
Trail Guide to Movement, Andrew Biel
The information in these books will help you to continue to digest and more deeply understand the information imparted in class. If your budget does not permit purchasing them at the time of the workshop series, it should not prevent you from signing up.
Optional Homework & Test
In addition to suggested reading, optional homework will be assigned between modules to help you apply knowledge and habituate the critical thinking skills each module imparts.
Additionally, at the end of the series, there will be an optional test that you will be able to take to get perspective on what information you retained and what information you could benefit from continuing to review and understand. Taking the test is optional.
Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Credits
Students who complete all of series one will receive a certificate of completion. Each module counts toward 4 continuing education credits for Yoga Alliance.
